Archival Overview
Prince of Mauretania and son of King Bocchus I, who commanded the royal cavalry escorting Roman quaestor Sulla through desert territory to negotiate the end of the Jugurthine War.
Biographical Record
Described by Roman historian Sallust in the Bellum Iugurthinum, Prince Volux was dispatched by his father King Bocchus I with an elite force of several thousand Mauretanian horsemen to meet Sulla deep in Numidian territory in 105 BCE.
When Jugurtha's scout forces suddenly appeared, threatening a trap, Volux demonstrated extraordinary tactical poise and personal loyalty, guiding Sulla's Roman legionaries through nighttime maneuvers past Jugurtha's camp to safety, securing the treaty that concluded the war.
