Biographical Record
Elijah ben Solomon Zalman (1720–1797 CE), known as the Vilna Gaon ('Genius of Vilna'), was an ascetic scholar who refused rabbinic office to study Torah unceasingly.
He restored critical textual accuracy across the entire rabbinic canon, encouraged the study of geometry and natural sciences, and inspired the founding of the Volozhin Yeshiva.
