Ville Ritola

Vilho Eino Ritola was born in Peräseinäjoki, western Finland. Emigrating to the United States at age seventeen to join his sister in New York City, Ritola worked as a construction carpenter. Joining the Finnish-American Athletic Club in the Bronx, he began training alongside Finnish distance runners, developing tremendous stamina through 15-mile runs through Manhattan and upstate New York.

Selected to represent Finland at the 1924 Paris Olympics, Ritola capitalized on Paavo Nurmi's absence in the 10,000 meters to obliterate the world record by twelve seconds, finishing over 300 meters ahead of second place. Three days later, he won gold in the 3,000m steeplechase by 75 meters. In total, Ritola won four gold medals and two silvers in Paris—a tally of six medals at a single Olympics that remains an unbroken record for distance runners.

At the 1928 Amsterdam Olympics, Ritola took silver behind Nurmi in the 10,000m before achieving his sweetest personal triumph in the 5,000m final: sprinting past Nurmi on the final bend to win gold in 14:38.0. Retiring with five Olympic golds and three silvers, Ritola lived in New York for five decades before returning to Finland in 1971, celebrated as an enduring icon of Finnish sisu (stoic resilience).
