Biographical Record
Vilhelm Moberg was born on August 20, 1898, in a soldier's cottage in Moshultamåla, Algutsboda, Småland. Working as a farmhand, glassblower, and provincial journalist, his roots in peasant labor shaped his fiery democratic egalitarianism.
Between 1949 and 1959, Moberg published his four-volume masterpiece: Utvandrarna (The Emigrants), Invandrarna (Unto a Good Land), Nybyggarna (The Settlers), and Sista brevet till Sverige (The Last Letter Home). Following Karl Oskar and Kristina Nilsson's perilous journey from starving Småland to the Minnesota frontier, the epic became the defining chronicle of Scandinavian migration, adapted into Oscar-nominated films by Jan Troell. A fierce anti-royalist and defender of civil liberties, he also authored Min svenska historia.
