Archival Overview
Master Danish painter acclaimed internationally as 'the painter of silence', renowned for enigmatic, muted grey interiors featuring open white doors, dust motes, and his wife Ida seen from behind.
Biographical Record
Vilhelm Hammershøi was born on May 15, 1864, in Copenhagen. Trained at the Royal Danish Academy under Frederik Vermehren and P.S. Krøyer's independent school, he charted an intensely individual aesthetic path away from both academic realism and bright Impressionism.
Living at Strandgade 30 in Christianshavn, Hammershøi painted minimalist, meditative domestic interiors in subtle gradations of gray, white, and soft brown, frequently featuring his wife Ida viewed from the back. Acclaimed by contemporary figures like Rainer Maria Rilke and Sergei Diaghilev, his enigmatic canvases evoke a timeless, metaphysical serenity that influenced 20th-century cinematography and modern art.
