Biographical Record

Vikram Sarabhai (1919–1971) earned his doctorate in cosmic ray physics at Cambridge under C.V. Raman. Convinced that an emerging post-colonial nation must deploy advanced space technology directly to solve social problems (agriculture, weather forecasting, education), he founded the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL) in Ahmedabad at age twenty-eight.

In 1962, Sarabhai established the Thumba Equatorial Rocket Launching Station in a humble church in Kerala, assembling India's first sounding rockets transported on bicycles. He founded ISRO in 1969, leading to the launch of India's first satellite Aryabhata and the revolutionary Satellite Instructional Television Experiment (SITE).
