Archival Overview

Earliest Latin biblical commentator and bishop, of North African Numidian origin, whose theological treatises on Revelation and Genesis were praised by Saint Jerome.

Biographical Record

Born in Roman Numidia and fluent in both Greek and Latin, Victorinus journeyed to the Danubian provinces where he was consecrated Bishop of Poetovio (modern Ptuj, Slovenia). He was the first theologian to author systematic verse-by-verse Latin commentaries on the Holy Scriptures.

His surviving commentary *In Apocalypsin* (On the Apocalypse) remains a vital monument of early Christian exegesis. He met his death with serene fortitude during the fierce persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian in 304 CE.
