Biographical Record
Victor Valensi was born into an illustrious Tunisian Jewish lineage in Tunis. He graduated as an architect DPLG from the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, returning to become the foremost theoretician of modern North African architecture.
Valensi championed the synthesis of local Maghrebi architectural features (horseshoe arches, zellige tilework, minaret towers) with modern reinforced concrete. His masterpiece, the Great Synagogue of Tunis on Avenue de la Liberté (inaugurated in 1937), stands as an iconic monument of Mediterranean civic heritage.
