Biographical Record

Henri de La Tour d'Auvergne, Vicomte de Turenne (1611–1675), served the French crown across forty years with unmatched strategic economy. In 1658 at the Battle of the Dunes, his combined forces with Cromwell's Ironsides captured Dunkirk, forcing Spain to sign the Treaty of the Pyrenees.

His winter campaign of 1674–1675 in Alsace remains a textbook classic: marching his army secretly behind the snow-capped Vosges Mountains, he surprised and routed 50,000 Imperial troops at Turckheim, saving Alsace for France.
