Biographical Record
Carl Gustaf Verner von Heidenstam was born on July 6, 1859, in Olshammar, Närke, into a noble family. Initially studying painting under Jean-Léon Gérôme in Paris, his extensive travels through the Mediterranean and the Orient inspired him to turn to literature.
In 1888, Heidenstam published his debut poetry collection Vallfart och vandringsår (Pilgrimage and Wander Years), challenging prevailing dour naturalism with vibrant sensual joy, individualism, and imagination. In 1897–1898, he published his monumental historical work Karolinerna (The Charles Men), depicting the tragic devotion and heroic suffering of the soldiers of King Charles XII during the Great Northern War. Elected to the Swedish Academy in 1912, he was awarded the 1916 Nobel Prize in Literature.
