Archival Overview
Revolutionary Danish designer celebrated for vibrant colors, futuristic materials, and pop art aesthetics, creator of the Panton Chair—the world's first single-piece molded plastic cantilever chair.
Biographical Record
Verner Panton was born on February 13, 1926, in Gamtofte on Funen. After working in Arne Jacobsen's architectural practice, he rejected conventional teakwood Scandinavian modesty in favor of bold colors, plastics, fiberglass, and immersive psychedelic environments.
In 1960, after years of development with Vitra, Panton unveiled the Panton Chair (S-Chair), the first chair in history molded from a single continuous piece of plastic with no legs. His sensational Flowerpot Lamp (1968) and total-room installations like Visiona II (1970) for the Cologne Furniture Fair established him as one of the most daring design visionaries of the 20th century.
