Peerless 4th-century Buddhist philosopher who authored the encyclopedic 'Abhidharmakosha' before converting to Mahayana under his brother Asanga, co-founding the Yogacara (Mind-Only / Vijnanavada) philosophical school.

Biographical Record

Vasubandhu (c. 320–400 CE) mastered Sarvastivada Abhidharma in Kashmir, composing the 600 verses of the 'Abhidharmakosha-Bhasya', which remains the universal curriculum for Buddhist psychological and cosmological analysis across Asia.

Converted to Mahayana by his elder brother Asanga, Vasubandhu authored his twin philosophical masterworks, 'Vimshatika' (Twenty Verses) and 'Trimshika' (Thirty Verses), arguing that external objects are mental projections of consciousness (Vijnapti-matra) arising from the karmic impressions stored in the storehouse consciousness (Alaya-vijnana).
