Archival Overview

Legendary Soviet super-heavyweight weightlifter who won back-to-back Olympic gold medals (1972, 1976), set 80 world records, and remained undefeated in major international competition for eight years.

Biographical Record

Vasily Ivanovich Alekseyev worked in forestry and mining in the Ryazan and Rostov regions, designing his own unorthodox strength training regimens in rivers and snow. In 1970, he became the first man in history to clean and jerk over 500 pounds (227 kg).

Between 1970 and 1978, Alekseyev dominated global weightlifting: he won eight consecutive World Championships and Olympic golds at Munich 1972 and Montreal 1976. In 1975, Sports Illustrated featured him on its cover as 'The World's Strongest Man', celebrating his 80 unbroken world records.
