Varvara Stepanova

Varvara Stepanova was a leading theorist and practitioner of Russian Constructivism, working in close collaboration with her husband, Alexander Rodchenko. She moved from visual poetry and non-objective figurative compositions into total functional production, seeking to integrate art directly into the daily fabric of the new socialist state.

Stepanova pioneered functionalist sportswear and utilitarian work clothing (prozodezhda), stripping apparel of ornamental bourgeois superfluity. At the First State Textile Factory, she and Liubov Popova revolutionized mass-market textiles with dynamic, geometric, and optical print patterns that replaced traditional floral motifs.
