Biographical Record

Maharishi Valmiki is revered throughout Indian civilization as the Adi Kavi (the First Poet). According to tradition, upon witnessing the grief of a female crane whose mate was felled by a hunter's arrow, Valmiki spontaneously uttered an involuntary verse of curse in perfect 32-syllable rhythm: the sloka meter, which became the standard form of classical Sanskrit epic poetry.

Inspired by Brahma and guided by Narada, Valmiki composed the Ramayana, an epic of 24,000 verses narrating the righteous journey of Rama, prince of Ayodhya, his devoted wife Sita, and the conquest of Lanka. Valmiki also granted sanctuary to Queen Sita in his ashram, where her twin sons Lava and Kusha were born and trained to sing the epic.
