Biographical Record

A successful barrister who trained at the Middle Temple in London, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (1875–1950) was inspired by Mahatma Gandhi to lead non-violent peasant satyagrahas in Kheda (1918) and Bardoli (1928), where grateful peasants bestowed upon him the title 'Sardar' (Chief).

Upon independence in 1947, Patel faced the monumental crisis of 565 independent princely states that threatened to balkanize India. Combining statesmanship, firm diplomacy, and police action in Hyderabad and Junagadh, Patel integrated every princely state into the Union. He also created the modern Indian Administrative Service (IAS).
