Valeriy Lobanovskyi (1939–2002) was a skilled winger who studied thermal engineering before turning to management, where he partnered with statistician Anatoliy Zelentsov to apply cybernetics, computer modeling, and physiological data to football tactics.
Under his iron discipline and concept of 'universality' (where any outfield player could assume any role), Dynamo Kyiv won thirteen Soviet league titles and became the first Soviet club to win a major European trophy (1975 Cup Winners' Cup), producing Ballon d'Or winners Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov. Kyiv's Dynamo Stadium bears his name.
