Biographical Record

Valeri Borisovich Kharlamov (1948–1981) was a Soviet hockey virtuoso whose blinding acceleration, stickhandling wizardry, and creative vision electrified fans around the world. Partnered with Boris Mikhailov and Vladimir Petrov on CSKA Moscow and the Red Machine national team, Kharlamov won two Olympic gold medals (1972, 1976) and eight World Championships.

During the seminal 1972 Summit Series against Canada's top NHL stars, Kharlamov's two brilliant goals in Game 1 stunned North America. Kharlamov was tragically killed alongside his wife in a car accident in 1981.
