Archival Overview

Premier Russian portraitist and painter whose luminous 'Girl with Peaches' (1887) heralded Russian Impressionism and whose aristocratic portraits captured the twilight of the Romanov Empire.

Biographical Record

Valentin Serov (1865–1911 CE) was the son of composer Alexander Serov, studying under Ilya Repin in Abramtsevo and at the Imperial Academy of Arts.

His masterwork Girl with Peaches brought sparkling plein-air sunlight and psychological freshness to Russian art; he later captured Tsar Nicholas II, Ida Rubinstein, and Diaghilev's Ballets Russes.
