Archival Overview
Second Marinid ruler who consolidated the Zenata tribal confederation, established dominance over the Rif and northern valleys, and resisted Almohad counter-offensives.
Biographical Record
Uthman I succeeded his father Abd al-Haqq I in 1217. Over a twenty-three-year reign characterized by continuous mobility and guerilla tactics, Uthman turned the Banu Marin into the preeminent military force across the Rif and eastern Morocco.
He exacted tribute from northern towns, checked imperial Almohad forces, and organized stable taxation systems that laid the foundation for the sedentary Marinid state before being murdered by a disgruntled foreign bodyguard in 1240.
