Archival Overview
The longest-reigning Hafsid monarch (1435–1488 AD, 53 years on the throne), who maintained stability across North Africa, negotiated trade with Florence and Venice, and welcomed Andalusian scholars.
Biographical Record
Abu Amr Uthman was the grandson of Abu Faris. Ascending the throne at age seventeen, he ruled for an astonishing fifty-three years, presiding over an era of profound diplomatic sophistication and urban peace in Tunis.
He signed bilateral commercial treaties with Florence under the Medici, Venice, and Aragon, and built grand public fountains and the Medersa al-Uthmaniyya in Tunis. He welcomed waves of Andalusian Muslim and Jewish refugees fleeing the Spanish Reconquista, integrating their craftsmanship into the Tunisian economy before his peaceful death in 1488.
