Usman dan Fodio (1754–1817 CE) was a Maliki scholar and Qadiri Sufi who initiated a vast educational and social reform movement in the Hausa kingdoms of West Africa.
Leading the Fulani War against corrupt local rulers, he founded the Sokoto Caliphate, establishing equitable rule of law, ending unlawful taxation, and insisting on full literacy for girls and women.
