Archival Overview
Syrian warrior-diplomat from Shayzar Castle whose delightful autobiography 'Kitab al-I'tibar' offers vivid eyewitness accounts of Crusader customs.
Biographical Record
Usama ibn Murshid ibn Munqidh was born in the cliffside fortress of Shayzar on the Orontes River to the ruling Banu Munqidh dynasty. A quintessential warrior-scholar, he fought Crusaders, Byzantines, and rival warlords, while simultaneously serving as high-level diplomat and courtier to Nur ad-Din, the Fatimids in Cairo, and Saladin in Damascus.
In his eighties, Usama dictated his immortal memoir, Kitab al-I'tibar (The Book of Contemplation). Filled with battlefield anecdotes, hunting adventures, medical curiosities, and humorous yet astute cultural observations on Crusader medical practices and Frankish social customs, it is one of the most vibrant autobiographies of the medieval world.
