Biographical Record
Umar al-Hantati, known in Berber as Faska u-Mzal Inti, was the leader of the powerful Hintata tribe in the High Atlas Mountains. He was among the earliest and most decisive chieftains to pledge allegiance to the Almohad spiritual reformer Ibn Tumart at Tinmel. Renamed 'Abu Hafs Umar' by Ibn Tumart in honor of Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab, he became the senior member of the Council of Ten.
As chief military commander under Caliph Abd al-Mu'min, Umar al-Hantati led victorious Almohad armies across Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and al-Andalus. His steadfast loyalty solidified the nascent empire, and his son and descendants established the illustrious Hafsid Dynasty which ruled Tunisia and eastern Algeria for over three centuries.
