Biographical Record
A devout Buddhist and student leader at Rangoon University alongside Aung San, U Nu (1907–1995) assumed leadership of the government when Aung San was assassinated in July 1947. On January 4, 1948, he became the first Prime Minister of the independent Union of Burma.
U Nu survived mutinies, communist rebellions, and ethnic wars, steering Burma into peaceful non-alignment. He convened the historic Sixth Buddhist Council (Chattha Sangayana) in 1954, constructing the Kaba Aye Pagoda. Ousted by General Ne Win's military coup in 1962, he spent years in exile and meditation.
