Turgut Özal (1927–1993) was an electrical engineer who worked at the World Bank before founding the Motherland Party (ANAP) following the 1980 military coup. Sweeping the 1983 democratic elections, Prime Minister Özal abolished strict foreign currency controls, deregulated telecommunications, and built the trans-European Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge.

Elected President in 1989, Özal deployed computer technology across government and transformed Turkey's regional diplomacy, championing the Black Sea Economic Cooperation and forging ties with newly independent post-Soviet Turkic republics. Shortly before his sudden death, he initiated secret peace negotiations to end the Kurdish conflict.
