Archival Overview

Tenth Sapa Inca and supreme military conqueror of the Inca Empire, who doubled the empire's size from Ecuador to central Chile and led a legendary balsa-raft expedition across the Pacific Ocean.

Biographical Record

Serving as supreme general under his father Pachacuti, Tupac Inca Yupanqui conquered the wealthy coastal Chimor (Chimu) Empire, the kingdom of Quito in Ecuador, and the Chachapoyas in the cloud forests. Succeeding his father in 1471, he pushed imperial borders south through Bolivia, northern Argentina, and central Chile to the Maule River.

According to Spanish chronicles (Pedro Sarmiento de Gamboa), Tupac Inca assembled a fleet of balsa rafts and voyaged across the Pacific for nine months, returning with gold, brass, and dark-skinned captives from distant islands (possibly Easter Island or the Galapagos). He built the royal estate of Chinchero.
