Biographical Record
Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj (1903–1990) was a Malaysian royal, lawyer, and statesman revered nationwide as Bapa Kemerdekaan ('Father of Independence') and Bapa Malaysia ('Father of Malaysia'). A prince of the Kedah royal family, he studied law at St Catharine's College, Cambridge, and the Inner Temple in London before becoming leader of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO) in 1951.
The Tunku forged the multi-ethnic Alliance Party, uniting Malay, Chinese, and Indian political organizations to demand peaceful independence from Great Britain. On August 31, 1957, before 20,000 citizens at Stadium Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur, he famously chanted 'Merdeka!' (Freedom) seven times. In 1963, he spearheaded the creation of the Federation of Malaysia, uniting Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak, and later served as the inaugural Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).
