Archival Overview
English footballer and manager who made history in 1979 as Britain's first £1 million player when Brian Clough signed him to Nottingham Forest, scoring the winning header in the 1979 European Cup Final in Munich.
Biographical Record
Trevor John Francis was born in Plymouth, Devon. Joining Birmingham City as a schoolboy prodigy, he scored on his senior debut at age sixteen and netted 119 league goals for the Blues over eight seasons, establishing himself as England's most exciting young forward.
In February 1979, legendary Nottingham Forest manager Brian Clough signed Francis for a British transfer record fee of £1 million. Clough famously wore a tracksuit and carrying a squash racket to the press conference, insisting the fee was £999,999 to spare Francis pressure. Just three months later, in May 1979 in Munich's Olympiastadion, Francis repaid every penny by heading home John Robertson's cross on the stroke of halftime to win the European Cup Final 1-0 against Malmö. He won a second European Cup with Forest in 1980, played in Italy for Sampdoria (winning the Coppa Italia), earned 52 England caps, and managed Sheffield Wednesday and Birmingham City to major cup finals.
