François-Dominique Toussaint Louverture was a Haitian general and the most prominent leader of the Haitian Revolution. A formerly enslaved man who gained freedom, he defeated French, Spanish, and British forces, emancipated the enslaved population, and drafted the 1801 Constitution establishing autonomy and the absolute eradication of slavery on Saint-Domingue.
