Archival Overview
Trailblazing Moroccan stage actress, co-founder of Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui alongside Abdelwahed Ouzri, and the first working artist appointed Minister of Culture in the Arab world (2007–2009).
Biographical Record
Touria Jebrane was the leading lady of Moroccan independent avant-garde theater. Graduating from the National Conservatory of Dramatic Art, she co-founded Masrah al-Youm (Théâtre d'Aujourd'hui) in 1987, staging bold, socially critical plays addressing women's rights, poverty, and state authority.
Abducted and attacked in 1989 for her progressive activism, she remained undaunted. In 2007, King Mohammed VI appointed her Minister of Culture, where she established the national artist status card, social security funds for aging performers, and extensive theatrical subsidies.
