"A creeper climbs, in whose embraces bound no other tree could live. But gallantly the giant wears the scarf."

Archival Overview

Bengali poet and translator recognized as the first Indian woman to write poetry in English and French, whose Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan established Indian English lyricism.

Biographical Record

Toru Dutt (1856–1877) spent four years studying in France and Cambridge before returning to Calcutta. Despite dying of tuberculosis at only twenty-one, she achieved international literary fame with her translations of French Romantic poetry, 'A Sheaf Gleaned in French Fields' (1876).

Her posthumous collection 'Ancient Ballads and Legends of Hindustan' (1882) rendered episodes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana into fluent Victorian English verse, alongside her autobiographical masterpiece 'Our Casuarina Tree'. Edmund Gosse hailed her as a fragile genius of world literature.
