Biographical Record

Torquato Tasso (1544–1595) was an Italian poet of the High Renaissance and Counter-Reformation, born in Sorrento. A prodigy who studied at Padua and Bologna, Tasso entered the court of Duke Alfonso II d'Este in Ferrara in 1565, where he composed his delicate pastoral play Aminta and labored on his epic poem.

His supreme epic, Gerusalemme Liberata ('Jerusalem Delivered'), dramatizes the First Crusade and the capture of Jerusalem by Godfrey of Bouillon. Marrying classical epic dignity with intense Christian mysticism and romantic passion—exemplified in the tragic love of the Crusader Tancred for the Saracen warrior maiden Clorinda—the work profoundly shaped European Baroque art, poetry, and opera.
