Tomaso Albinoni was born into a wealthy Venetian paper merchant family, describing himself on title pages as 'dilettante veneto' (an independent Venetian amateur), which freed him from having to secure church or royal court employment. Albinoni was renowned across Europe for his sparkling instrumental concertos and eighty operas.
His Concerti a cinque (Op. 7 and Op. 9) pioneered the solo oboe concerto, featuring sublime, cantabile adagios that showcase the singing voice of the wind instrument. Johann Sebastian Bach held Albinoni in high esteem, using themes from his trio sonatas to compose keyboard fugues for his students.
