Archival Overview

Iconic Canadian painter whose luminous, expressive masterworks The Jack Pine and The West Wind revolutionized Canadian landscape art, sparking the formation of the Group of Seven.

Biographical Record

Thomson worked as a commercial artist at Grip Ltd. in Toronto alongside future members of the Group of Seven. In 1912, he traveled to Algonquin Park, finding his artistic home among the rocky shores, pine ridges, and northern skies, working as an expert canoe guide and fire ranger.

Working in a shack behind the Studio Building in Toronto, Thomson painted vibrant oil sketches on birch panels, capturing the raw chromatic brilliance of the Canadian Shield. On July 8, 1917, he vanished mysteriously on Canoe Lake, his overturned canoe discovered later, creating an enduring national legend.
