Archival Overview

Third and final "Great Unifier" of Japan who triumphed at the Battle of Sekigahara (1600). Established the Tokugawa Shogunate and made Edo (Tokyo) the seat of government, inaugurating two and a half centuries of peace, stability, and cultural flourishing.

Biographical Record

Enduring childhood as a political hostage of the Imagawa clan, Ieyasu mastered unshakeable patience and diplomatic survival alongside Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Appointed Sei-i Taishōgun by the Emperor in 1603, he codified the Laws for Military Houses (Buke Shohatto).

He instituted the alternate-year residence system (Sankin-kōtai) for feudal lords, eliminating rebellion. Deified after death as Tosho Daigongen (Great Manifestation of the East Light), he was enshrined in gold splendor at Nikkō Tōshō-gū.
