Shantinatha (16th Tirthankara & Universal Emperor)

Shantinatha was born in Hastinapur to King Vishvasena and Queen Achira. When his mother was pregnant with him, a devastating plague and war threatening the kingdom miraculously subsided into tranquil harmony, inspiring his parents to name him Shantinatha (Lord of Peace).

The Golden Chakravartin

Possessing the divine celestial wheel (Chakra-ratna), Shantinatha conquered all six continents of the known world, uniting warring tribes and kingdoms under a single reign of law, prosperity, and order. He commanded limitless armies, boundless wealth, and thousands of royal vassals.

The Great Abdication

At the pinnacle of earthly glory, gazing upon the beauty of the celestial constellations, Shantinatha realized that even a world emperor cannot take a single grain of dust beyond the threshold of death. Abdicating his imperial crown in favor of his son, he stepped into the forest barefoot. After sixteen years of intense penance, he attained omniscience, delivering the sacred peace prayers (Shanti-Stotra) that are recited to this day to dispel fear and misfortune.
