Mallinatha (19th Tirthankara of Jainism)

Mallinatha was born to King Kumbha and Queen Prabhavati in the ancient kingdom of Mithila. Renowned for supreme beauty, wisdom, and spiritual purity, six powerful neighbouring kings simultaneously demanded her hand in marriage, threatening total war if refused.

The Parable of the Golden Urn

Rather than sending an army, Mallinatha devised a sublime philosophical lesson. She commissioned a life-sized golden statue crafted precisely in her likeness, but hollow inside, with a hidden opening at the crown. For several months, every time she ate, she dropped a portion of delicious delicacies into the statue and sealed it.

Inviting the six passionate kings into a private chamber, she let them admire the radiant golden statue. Suddenly, she unsealed the crown. A suffocating, putrid stench of rotting food filled the room, forcing the kings to cover their noses in disgust. Mallinatha gently addressed them: 'O Kings, if the exterior of this inanimate gold pleases you, why are you disgusted by its contents? The human body you lust after is exactly like this jar—a beautiful exterior skin concealing decay, blood, and bones. Direct your love toward the immortal soul instead of fleeting physical flesh.'

Enlightenment and Monastic Legacy

Deeply shaken and spiritually awakened, all six kings renounced their crowns and took monastic vows under her. Mallinatha attained Kevala Jnana shortly thereafter and achieved final liberation on the sacred heights of Shikharji.
