Supreme prophet and revitalizer of Jainism. Renounced royal majesty at age thirty to practice severe austerities, attaining Kevala Jnana (omniscience) and preaching absolute non-violence (Ahimsa) toward all living beings.
Biographical Record
Born a prince of the Ikshvaku dynasty in ancient Bihar, Mahavira abandoned all possessions to wander as a silent ascetic. After twelve years of meditation, he attained supreme enlightenment beneath a Sala tree by the Rjjupalika River.
For thirty years, he taught the Five Great Vows (Mahavratas): non-violence, truth, non-stealing, celibacy, and non-possession, establishing a fourfold community of monks, nuns, and householders before attaining Moksha at Pawapuri.
