Biographical Record
Timur (1336–1405), though walking with a pronounced limp (hence "Timur the Lame" or Tamerlane), possessed unmatched tactical ruthlessness and logistical mastery. He defeated the Golden Horde under Tokhtamysh, invaded northern India to capture Delhi, and devastated the Mamluk sultanate in Syria.
At the Battle of Ankara (1402), he decisively defeated and captured the Ottoman Sultan Bayezid I, halting Ottoman expansion into Europe for half a century before dying on campaign toward Ming China.
