Biographical Record
Thomas Sankara was born on December 21, 1949, in Yako. A charismatic army captain and accomplished jazz guitarist, Sankara seized power in a popular revolution on August 4, 1983. In August 1984, he abolished the colonial name Upper Volta, renaming the nation Burkina Faso ('Land of the Upright / Incorruptible People').
Sankara launched unprecedented progressive reforms: massive reforestation (planting 10 million trees to halt Sahel desertification), outlawing female genital mutilation and forced marriage, building schools and clinics in every village, and achieving food self-sufficiency without foreign aid. He sold the government's luxury fleet of Mercedes cars, requiring ministers to drive the humble Renault 5. On October 15, 1987, Sankara was assassinated in a bloody coup backed by international interests.
