Biographical Record

Thomas Sankara was a Burkinabé military officer, Marxist revolutionary, and Pan-Africanist who served as President of Burkina Faso from 1983 until his assassination in 1987. Dubbed 'Africa's Che Guevara', he renamed Upper Volta to Burkina Faso ('Land of Incorruptible People'), vaccinated 2.5 million children in weeks, planted 10 million trees to stop the Sahara, and outlawed female genital mutilation.
