Biographical Record

Theodosius Dobzhansky (1900–1975) graduated from the University of Kyiv and worked under Yuri Filipchenko in Leningrad before emigrating to the US in 1927 to join Morgan's laboratory. Shifting genetics from laboratory bottles to natural wild populations of Drosophila pseudoobscura in the Sierra Nevada, Dobzhansky revealed immense natural genetic variation.

In 1937, his seminal book synthesized laboratory population genetics (Mendel) with field observation and natural selection (Darwin), explaining how geographic races evolve into reproductively isolated species through isolating mechanisms. In 1973, he penned his famous essay summarizing modern biology.
