Archival Overview
Revered 4th-century Bishop of Cyrene and Christian martyr who endured tongue-mutilation and torture under Roman Governor Dignianus for refusing to surrender sacred scriptures.
Biographical Record
Theodore served as Christian bishop of the Pentapolis capital of Cyrene during the Great Persecution initiated by Roman Emperor Diocletian. When provincial governor Dignianus commanded all bishops to surrender holy manuscripts for public burning and sacrifice to idols, Theodore refused.
Subjected to severe scourging, the governor ordered his tongue cut out to silence his preaching; Christian tradition records that he continued praising God until his execution in 310 CE. His memory is venerated on March 26 in the Coptic and Eastern Orthodox calendars.
