Archival Overview
Pioneering Danish Impressionist painter who befriended Paul Gauguin, introduced French open-air impressionism to Denmark, and painted luminous pastoral scenes of cattle on Saltholm.
Biographical Record
Poul Sivert Theodor Philipsen was born on June 10, 1840, in Copenhagen into a cultured merchant family. After studying agriculture, he entered the Royal Academy of Fine Arts and traveled to Paris in 1874, where he discovered the revolutionary work of the French Impressionists.
In 1884, Philipsen forged a close artistic friendship with Paul Gauguin during Gauguin's residence in Copenhagen, learning Gauguin's vibrant color theories. Philipsen applied these techniques to Danish nature, spending every summer on the flat island of Saltholm painting cattle bathed in sparkling autumn sunlight and reflections. In 1891, he co-founded Den Frie Udstilling (The Free Exhibition) to support avant-garde artists.
