Archival Overview
Prominent Flemish Baroque painter whose Italian Caravaggesque style and dramatic chiaroscuro made him a leading artist for Archdukes Albert and Isabella at the Basilica of Scherpenheuvel.
Biographical Record
Van Loon traveled to Rome twice between 1602 and 1608, immersing himself in Caravaggio's dramatic tenebrism and the classicism of Annibale Carracci. Returning to the Spanish Netherlands, he gained prestigious patronage from the Habsburg court in Brussels.
Between 1623 and 1628, he painted his crowning achievement: a monumental cycle of seven altarpieces dedicated to the Life of the Virgin Mary for the newly consecrated pilgrimage Basilica of Our Lady of Scherpenheuvel, creating masterpieces of Counter-Reformation devotional art.
