"We bind ourselves together by taking hold of the Great Tree of Peace. In all of your deliberations, consider the impact of your decisions on the next seven generations."

Archival Overview

Legendary Huron/Haudenosaunee prophet who transformed five warring nations into the Iroquois Confederacy. Established the Great Law of Peace (Gayaneshagowa)—the world's oldest participatory constitutional democracy.

Biographical Record

Born with a speech impediment on the Bay of Quinte, Deganawida traveled in a white stone canoe across Lake Ontario to bring an end to generational blood feuds among the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca nations. Partnering with the orator Hiawatha and clan mother Jigonhsasee, he cured the warlord Tadodaho through songs of peace.

Beneath the great White Pine at Onondaga Lake, the leaders buried their weapons of war, establishing a government guided by collective consensus, female elder veto, and stewardship for the seventh generation to come.
