Archival Overview
Young Chipewyan woman whose bravery and winter expedition forged an epochal peace between the Dene and Cree nations and enabled northern fur trade expansion.
Biographical Record
Thanadelthur, whose name means 'marten shake', was a young Dene woman captured by Cree raiders in 1713. Escaping through harsh subarctic wilderness, she reached York Factory on Hudson Bay, where governor James Knight recognized her exceptional intelligence and strategic vision.
In 1715, Thanadelthur led a perilous mission across hundreds of miles of frozen terrain back to the warring nations. Her fierce eloquence shamed rival warriors into lowering their weapons, establishing an enduring peace and paving the way for the construction of Fort Churchill.
