Archival Overview
Sabian mathematician and astronomer in Baghdad who pioneered amicable numbers, non-Euclidean geometry concepts, and solar year calculations.
Biographical Record
Thabit ibn Qurra was a brilliant polymath from the Sabian community of Harran who flourished under the patronage of the Banu Musa brothers and Caliph al-Mu'tadid in Baghdad. His mathematical treatises made foundational advances in number theory, introducing the Thabit theorem for finding amicable numbers and expanding spherical trigonometry.
In astronomy, Thabit conducted critical observations that refined Ptolemy's models, calculating the length of the sidereal solar year with remarkable precision. His translations and revisions of Euclid's Elements, Archimedes' works, and Apollonius' Conics preserved and expanded classical mathematical thought for subsequent civilizations.
