Terence Frederick Venables was born in Dagenham, Essex. A clever midfield technician, he made over 500 league appearances for Chelsea, Tottenham Hotspur, Queens Park Rangers, and Crystal Palace, earning two England caps.
Venables became one of the most tactically innovative English managers in history. After guiding Crystal Palace and QPR to promotion, he moved to Barcelona in 1984, earning the affectionate nickname "El Tel." He ended Barça's eleven-year title drought by winning La Liga in 1985 and reaching the 1986 European Cup final. Returning to England, he won the 1991 FA Cup with Tottenham Hotspur with Paul Gascoigne. Appointed England manager in 1994, Venables orchestrated the cultural phenomenon of Euro '96 on home soil, unleashing "football's coming home" mania with a tactical masterclass in England's 4-1 thrashing of the Netherlands, before an agonizing semi-final penalty shootout defeat to Germany.
